Manipal: After bringing down names such as A P J Abdul Kalam and Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Manipal University has booked a date with the President of India, Prathiba D Patil. She has been confirmed as the chief guest for the Annual Convocation event at KMC Greens.
The major reason for the Convocation being pushed by more than a month compared to previous years, was to accomodate Prathiba Patil's visit. The university by giving undue importance to the chief guest still fiddles around with the dates. The much awaited function for university's alumni might be on Dec 8th or Dec 9th.
The cause of the last-minute confusion remains credit to Prathiba Patil's prior engagements. The President after arriving in Mangalore shall take part in the first 'World Konkani Cultural Summit 2010' in the city. According to sources, the organisers shall wish for the first lady to spend the night in Mangalore itself after the function.
As on Nov 13th, Manipal University PRO, Alex Chandy said, "We are trying our best to bring the President down to Manipal on 8th evening itself. If it is to happen on 9th, then the function shall take place in the afternoon." The website of MU reads that separate functions shall be held on both days. Those students who cannot make it to the grand ceremony on one date, can attend the function on the other.
If Prathiba Patil is to attend the convocation on Dec 8th, the ceremony shall commence around 7 pm. In which case MU chancellor, Ramdas Pai shall preside as the chief guest on Dec 9th, the timings of which are yet to be provided. The Convocation shall be followed by MU Alumni Meet on Dec 11
